Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in demand to current cost increases for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are turning to social media. But counterfeit injections are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she explained.
Her team has previously encountered individuals harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” stated the doctor. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet approved … may subject users to potentially significant medical dangers”.
