In a inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, promising “a different age” and an ambitious commencement to his term.

A Groundbreaking Figure

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and making sure smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
