The Tottenham defender scored twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.
